From one shifty mother to another…
I know how important the environment is to you and how concerned you are about your footprint. As we multiply we wonder what world we are leaving behind. At Shifty Mother we are using natural fibers for our styles as we love the way they feel on our skin and the fact that they do not create any micro plastics. Sustainability is not just a word but a means of production for us. This starts by creating mindful patterns that do not create a lot of off cuts fabric waste. When ever we can we use dead stock fabrics and collaborate with local community partners that have sustainable fabric recycling practices. Most of our pieces are naturally dyed in small batches. We currently produce all our garments right here in Victoria in beautiful British Columbia, Canada, situated on the unceded traditional territories of the Lkwungen (Lekwungen) peoples.
Created for comfort
All of our pieces are created from natural fibers which is good for your skin and good for the planet. Every time I create a new style it is tested for comfort to see how the garment works for a shifty mothers lifestyle. We try to mostly work with 100 % linen as this can be sustainably grown using much less water than cotton.
Transparency
We are striving to make our practices as transparent as possible, that starts at our natural fiber suppliers to our dye process and our manufacturing spaces. Generating as little waste as possible is at the core of our beliefs.
Natural dyes
A lot of our fabrics colours are created using natural dyes. This means that we can ensure sustainable dye practices considering the environment and the waste water. If it cannot be safely disposed off in our garden we will not use it. We use eucalyptus and avocado and other seasonal botanicals. The technique we often apply is bundle dyeing. This results in a beautifully varied botanical print and just like you: a one of a kind
